Exploring the sights of Tokyo

Fortunate enough for a brief layover in Tokyo, my journey kicked off with an exhilarating overnight flight from London with ANA Airlines. A swift taxi ride from Haneda Airport brought me to the doorstep of The Capitol Hotel in Tokyo, setting the stage for an adventure that would unfold in the vibrant tapestry of this dynamic city.

Stepping into The Capitol Hotel Tokyu felt like entering an elegant Japanese cocoon of comfort during my recent stay. With a total of 251 rooms, including 14 luxurious suites, the hotel offered a perfect blend of sophistication and tranquility. Exploring the premises revealed exclusive restaurants, captivating art installations, and awe-inspiring architecture meticulously crafted by the renowned Kengo Kuma.

The hotel's strategic location added to the allure – adjacent to the historical Hie Shrine and providing captivating views of Japan's Diet building and the sprawling metropolis filled with towering skyscrapers.

Sunday Sightseeing

With just one full day to embrace Tokyo's wonders, I opted for an early night, eager to seize every moment in this vibrant city. The following morning, I kicked off my day with an invigorating gym session at the well-appointed fitness center, setting the tone for an energising Tokyo experience. Breakfast at The Tokyo Capitol Hotel unfolded as a lavish feast, and I indulged in the Japanese spread, replenishing my energy after the revitalising gym session. It was a perfect start to a day filled with exploration and cultural delights.

Embarking on Tokyo exploration from The Capitol Hotel Tokyo is a breeze, with Tameike-Sanno Station conveniently right next door. After a brief consultation with the concierge, armed with a street guide and a curated list of recommendations, my journey unfolded. First on the agenda – the iconic Shibuya Scramble Crossing. With a day pass in hand, the adventure was set in motion for an unforgettable Tokyo experience.

Emerging from the subway, I encountered an unexpected downpour, but the allure of Shibuya Crossing was too enticing to let the rain dampen my spirits. Despite the weather, I seized a fleeting photo opportunity and pressed forward, undeterred, eager to immerse myself in the iconic energy of Shibuya Crossing.

For those who are unaware of this area Shibuya Crossing, located in Tokyo's bustling Shibuya district, is a world-famous pedestrian intersection known for its organized chaos. During traffic light changes, pedestrians from all directions cross simultaneously, creating a mesmerising spectacle. Surrounded by vibrant neon lights and the energetic pulse of city life, Shibuya Crossing is a symbol of Tokyo's dynamic urban culture.

Meiji Jingu Shrine

My next destination was the serene Meiji Jingu Shrine. Battling worsening rain, I opted for an Uber to navigate Tokyo's streets. Much to my relief, the seamless experience mirrored what I've come to expect worldwide. In just 13 minutes and approximately £13 later (more on costs later), I found myself at the tranquil grounds of the shrine, ready to explore its rich cultural significance.

Nestled within the heart of bustling Tokyo, the Meiji Jingu Shrine stands as a serene oasis, offering a haven of tranquility amid the urban vibrancy. As I entered through the towering torii gates, a profound sense of calm enveloped me. The lush forested pathway leading to the shrine heightened the anticipation, creating a sensory journey that transcends the ordinary.

Stepping into the shrine grounds felt like entering a sacred realm where time slows, and the essence of Japanese spirituality unfolds. The towering trees, some over a century old, whispered tales of a bygone era. The main hall, with its majestic cypress wood architecture, exuded a sublime aura of reverence.

As the rain continued to dance on the shrine's rooftops, the serene ambiance intensified. Each step felt like a pilgrimage, and in that sacred space, I found a harmonious blend of history, nature, and spiritual resonance that defines the essence of Meiji Jingu Shrine in Tokyo.

Tokyo Tower

As the day wound down, I eagerly boarded the underground en route to my final destination: Tokyo Tower. A stroke of luck, the rain was finally letting up, promising spectacular views ahead. The anticipation of witnessing Tokyo's skyline from this iconic landmark filled me with excitement.

Embarking on the Tokyo Tower adventure on a grey day added a subtle, moody allure to the experience. As I ascended to the top deck, the cityscape unfolded beneath a soft, diffused light. The neutral tones of the overcast sky created a unique atmosphere, lending a quiet beauty to the urban landscape.

Stepping onto the top deck felt like entering a serene realm above the city. Tokyo's skyline, enveloped in a gentle grey hue, took on a calm and contemplative quality. The muted light highlighted the architectural details, creating a different perspective of the city below.

Despite the lack of vibrant sunshine, Tokyo Tower embraced a different kind of elegance. The subdued tones and tranquil ambiance added a layer of sophistication to the journey. It turned the experience into a reflective and introspective moment, where Tokyo's beauty revealed itself in a more understated yet captivating manner against the backdrop of the grey sky.

Extending the joy of my Tokyo adventure, I hopped on the underground to make my way back to the hotel, relishing the city's pulse one last time.
