Dinner with a twist

After diving into our fabulous room with a treasure trove of amenities, the real adventure began – meeting the locals! We joined the lively Hachigatsu-Odori dance, grooving to the beat with newfound friends. The feast was a culinary symphony, and, oh, the Shochu flowed at a spirited 25% alcohol! Unanimously agreed: we didn't just embrace the local culture; we salsa-danced into its heart.

Adventures on Amami

Waking up to the soothing melody of waves outside my window, I felt the anticipation of an exciting day ahead. Our journey kicked off with a delightful exploration of the mangrove primeval forest by kayak. As we paddled through the serene waters, our guide transformed the experience into a playful adventure, becoming our very own "Mangrove Detective." With infectious enthusiasm, they pointed out hidden treasures, shared intriguing tales about the ecosystem, and turned the kayak expedition into an interactive nature quest. It wasn't just a serene paddle; it was a fun-filled voyage, unlocking the mysteries of the mangrove forest in the most engaging way possible!

Having experienced the charm of Oshima Tsumugi Workshop firsthand, we immersed ourselves in the intricate world of traditional Amami textile art. The visit provided a glimpse into the skilled craftsmanship of Oshima Tsumugi, showcasing the meticulous weaving techniques and the unique dyeing methods employed by seasoned artisans. While we didn't participate hands-on, we absorbed the cultural richness and significance of Oshima Tsumugi, appreciating the artistry woven into each fabric. It was a fascinating encounter with the heritage and craftsmanship of this unique Amami tradition.

With appetites in full swing, we indulged in a delicious lunch – a bento box accompanied by soothing miso soup. The bento box, a traditional Japanese lunchbox, featured an array of flavors and textures, each compartment holding a delightful treat. Paired with miso soup, it was a satisfying culinary experience, highlighting the artistry in both taste and presentation.

Our journey into the heart of Amami Oshima's cultural tapestry continued with a hands-on adventure in mud dyeing – a distinctive craft exclusive to this enchanting island. Guided by skilled artisans, we immersed ourselves in the ancient art of using natural mud, sourced locally, to dye fabrics. The process unfolded as a tactile exploration, allowing us to feel the textures and nuances of the mud-dyeing technique.

As we delved into this authentic and age-old practice, our creations began to take shape. The rich hues and earthy tones that emerged in our mud-dyed masterpieces told a story of the island's traditions and the connection between nature and craftsmanship.

This immersive experience not only provided a deeper understanding of the intricate mud dyeing process but also allowed us to actively participate in preserving and celebrating Amami Oshima's unique cultural heritage. It was a hands-on journey, creating more than just fabric – we crafted memories interwoven with the essence of Amami's artistic traditions.

As my incredible journey through Japan concludes, I bid a fond farewell to the enchanting island of Amami. With gratitude in my heart for the unforgettable experiences, I embark on the flight back to Haneda and eventually to London. Each moment in Japan, from the cultural wonders to the natural beauty, has left an indelible mark. Arigatou gozaimasu, Japan – until we meet again!
